It's that time of year again when people start evaluating their lives and making grand promises to themselves and the world. I think that every day, every moment is a time to grow; however, I do think the new year is a good excuse to take a calculated look at my life.

The most important thing for me in 2015 is to start knocking some stuff off my 30 Before 30 List. In specific, I'd love to aggressively attack my credit cards and my savings fund. I hate having debt, I hate thinking about debt, I hate worrying about money. So, the plan is to just pretend to not have any money for a while. I'm going to really focus on grocery shopping, not eating out, and eating good home cooked food.

This will help me not only with saving money, but hopefully with one of my other goals: being healthier. This means losing weight, but also just having a better life style. This past year I really surprised myself: hiking a mountain, walking 5Ks, and working out. I've back slid a little, but want to amp it up again as 2014 comes to an end. I want to be able to climb a bigger mountain without huffing and puffing the whole way up. Maybe I could jog the 5K instead of walking OR even run!

Another thing that I want to focus on this year is creating more. This includes making wonderful meals, but also blogging. I've been really good about getting content out every Wednesday and it really makes me feel happy. I absolutely love that I have such great people who read my blog, but even if you didn't, I like what I'm writing. I like looking back on things that I've written and seeing what's changed, not only in my life, but in my voice, in my style of writing. I like sharing my life with you, but also future me.

I want to work on really being present. No matter what I'm doing, I want to be one hundred percent into it. Whether that be having a conversation, writing, or even watching a TV show. I want to work on living in the moment, no matter what that moment may be. I don't want to half experience anything. Where I've been working on this lately, is at concerts. I feel like there was a time in my life, even now where I really want to take pictures while the band is playing. However, I have learned that none of the pictures I take are ever really worth it. So instead what I try to do is just be there, just really soak it in and then instead of showing a picture I can paint a picture with my words... A little corny, but it really makes the memories more vivid to me than just a shitty cell phone picture.

What are you trying to work on in 2015?

5 Ways to Get More Sleep

I absolutely hate getting up early. I hate waking up to an alarm. So, I try to do everything I can to get as much sleep as possible. Here's five things I do that help me get my eight hours every night.

  1. Don't hit the snooze button!
    • Instead, I set my alarm for the absolute last possible minute I can wake up, still allowing for 10 extra minutes in case of defrosting or something hideous happening. I figured out it takes me 30 minutes-ish to get ready, so I give myself a solid 45. Since I started doing this, I find that I sleep better and I get up exactly when my alarm goes off. How well do you really sleep that last 30 minutes that your alarm is going off anyway? And if you live with someone, they're not sleeping during that time either. I have two alarms set every week day morning. One at the time I need to wake up and one at the time I need to leave. My morning is like a race against time, but I never feel rushed because I'm rested!
  2.  Pick out a few different outfits for the week.
    • A lot of people I know will pick out their outfit the night before they go to sleep and I used to be on that band wagon as well. The problem I found was sometimes I would wake up to rain or a bloated belly or simply just hating the one outfit I had picked out. The days the outfit I had picked out didn't hurt anything, but it didn't help either. What I've started doing is on Sunday sometime I pick out about 4-5 outfits that I really feel good about. My closet is a mix of styles so I have lots of choices. So if on Monday I wake up and am not feeling the loose flowy choice, I still have three other options that are completely different. One of them always works.
  3. Shower the night before.
    • This is completely a personal preference, but what helps me get an extra hour of sleep (at least) is taking my shower the night before. My shower itself can take 10 minutes if I need it to, but if you add shaving it can be 30 minutes. Then on top of that I have to get my hair not only dry but styled. Styling my hair alone takes about 20 minutes but if you add blow drying it can be up to an hour! And personally, I don't like blow drying my hair. If I tried to let it air dry, I'd have to add an extra 2 hours to my morning. If I'm going to get up at 4, it's either going to be for over time or a work out!
  4. Have a makeup routine.
    • I love messing around with different make up styles, but in my day to day life I try to go more simple. I'd rather spend more time on my hair anyway. Most days lately I don't even bother with eyeliner. That can be a bitch to get on straight especially if you're tired and/or you like the winged look like me. I don't wear face makeup (concealer, blush, etc) so that cuts down on a lot of my time. I think it's important to have some kind of routine you can do mindlessly. My cousins can perfectly execute the cat eye, add mascara, and be out the door in 5 minutes. I; however, struggle every time to get the sides even and it takes concentrated effort to do it. Everyone must find their own "look".
  5. Make your meals the night before
    • Food prep can also help save time in the morning. Any breakfast or lunch items that you can make ahead of time are great. I really love quiches or egg souffles that can be baked on the weekend and reheated throughout the week. Other breakfast that are easy to go are fruit, yogurt, breakfast bars, or poptarts. Lunch can be pasta, casseroles, soups that you premake and can be dished into individual servings. If you're more of a sandwich/salad person, you can bag individual items and then put them together at lunch (i.e. wet items in one bag with dry ingredients in a separate bag ready to go).
Do you guys have any other bright ideas that could help me?

Poor Unfortunate Souls

Whenever we have new people at work we go around the group and introduce ourselves with a little fun nugget about ourselves. My fun fact at work the last time we did this was "Hi, I'm Lauren. I like Disney and Ursula's my favorite character." Boring, move on, next. Well apparently not. Shit blew up.

"Who's Ursula?"
"The villain from Little Mermaid."
Raised eyebrows.
"Oh, she's fabulous!" Coming to my girl's defense.
More raised eyebrows.

So, apparently this is a topic worthy of discussion. Let's discuss.

The design of Ursula was ultimately based on the drag queen Divine. I'm so glad they went with that version of Ursula. This earlier sketch is pretty fabulous I will admit; however, I think she looks very fishy. One third fish, one third octopus, one third human. The Divine inspired Ursula that ended up being in the movie is perfection to me. Even though she's half octopus, she only has six tentacles. That's so she could be animated more clearly; helpful fact if you're ever going to go lavender for Halloween. Her hair is very Meryl in Devil Wears Prada. She's got that red lip classic thing that I like, Marilyn mole, fabulous accessories, and just rocking that LBD. She's basically the first plus sized model I ever saw. If she had an Insta, I would check it every day to see that #ootd. I mean, never underestimate the importance of body language when it comes to picking your favorite Disney character.

Someone else I would follow on IG: Vanessa. When Ariel gets "too close" to making Eric fall in love with her, Ursula transforms into Vanessa. She's pretty gorgeous, but like mean girl pretty. Like she looks like a huge bitch, but guys are into that sometimes. This transformation taught me that people will make you sign contracts and promise you a thing and then do everything then can to make you fail. Great life lesson, Disney. Nothing is fair, but if you're good, you'll always win. Is that karma? I think so.

Ursula's also great because she makes no apologies for being evil or for her size. She is just her and she loves that. And I love her for that. Sometimes I channel Ursula in my every day life. These GIFs explain these times perfectly.

When people can't decide what to order.
How I feel when I give my friends piggy back rides - drunk with power.
Dancing to Betty Who when I'm alone.
When someone orders a "Medium" at Starbucks.
When I don't get to eat lunch right at 12 during the work week.
When I drop anything I care about, but especially peanut butter M&Ms.
All day every day. My life is a joke and I'm in on it.
